A TOTALLY “UNIQUE” CHARLES 1st SHILLING (mm. CROWN) 1635-36
F+/AVF. Struck from a previously unknown die with a totally “Unique” & Major LEGEND ERROR.
(The King’s Name spelt ”CARLVS”with the O totally omitted) S.2791. As far as we are aware, this is a previously unrecorded & serious ERROR coin which was struck from an obverse die where the die sinker carelessly omitted to enter the “O“ in the King’s name. So instead of reading ”CAROLVS” like every other coin you will ever see ....it UNIQUELY reads “CARLVS“.
This was a VERY major error of a totally unacceptable nature. (One does NOT spell the King’s name incorrectly on the Royal state coinage!) An error which was quite clearly quickly noticed by the mint master at the Tower Mint, with the result that the die was clearly immediately retired and being unrepairable was certainly scrapped, probably after only a handful of coins had been struck from it, with the result that of this tiny number of incorrectly spelt coins, this is probably a unique survivor.
This example is as nice as this issue generally arrives and overall is much better than par for the course with full legends & zero distracting issues.
A F+/ AV coin with a vey decent and central strike. An exceptional & unique piece which is fit for inclusion in the finest specialist collection of Error coins.
