A Superb & Totally Exceptional QUEEN MARY STUART of Scotland, “RYAL of THIRTY SHILLINGS” of 1565 (Fourth Period 1565-67) Mary & Henry Darnley This early Crown Sized Scots coin of Queen Mary & Henry Darnley is normally only seen in good fine to VF at best. This totally wonderful example is one of the very best examples of this greatly attractive & sought after type that you’ll ever see. If you are a serious collector of 16th century hammered silver, and with a particular interest in the coins of Scotland, this is a seriously “must have” piece. Most examples of this coin which show up are basic “basket cases” with major wear and / or damage. We’ve been buying choice & rare coins professionally since 1977 and in that time this is without any doubt the very best example we’ve seen. The coin is totally original and displays a superb battleship grey tone over practically “as struck” features, all set on a tip top quality planchette. Only the very slightest and lightest cabinet friction to the toning on the very highest points of the design removes this from an uncirculated grade. In reality the coin has experienced Zero Circulation and is pretty much just as it was on the day it was struck in 1565. An incredible survivor. We therefore have no issue at all in giving a description of this specimen as About Uncirculated (AU58) This is a totally lovely coin of the greatest possible quality. Grades Strictly AU Excessively Rareand a totally exquisite coin in this grade. £4450
