A RARE & ATTRACTIVE “Revaluation of 1578” RYAL of MARY (36s 9d) In The Name of Mary alone With “Crown & Thistle” Counter-stamp. For continued use under JAMES VI. 1567 This is a very good example of the Queen Mary (alone) counter-stamped Ryal which was revalued at 36 shillings & 9 pence under James VI. This issue was heavily used in general circulation and is normally only seen in a really tatty and battered state. This specimen is a most pleasing example of this much sought after type. This counter-stamped “In Mary’s Name Only” coin is much much rarer than the Mary & Henry Darnley counter-stamped piece and we only see this “Mary Alone” type very occasionally. If you are a serious collector of 16th century hammered silver with a particular interest in the coins of Scotland, this is a very confident contender for inclusion in you collection. The coin displays a superb even grey tone and was originally well & centrally struck on a very good & uncompromised planchette. The coin shows a VERY CLEAR “Crown & Thistle counter-stamp which itself shows great detail. This is a coin which has experienced very careful use and genuine circulation with zero damage. We therefore have no issue at all in giving a description of this specimen as AVF / GF This is a good looking coin of the greatest historical interest.
