A Very Scarce and High Grade JAMES VI of Scotland. (7th Coinage) A Portrait “Ten Shillings” of 1595 (9 over inverted 9) Possibly a Uniquely Surviving Overdate Variety. [A POSSIBLY UNIQUE OVER-DATE] We have yet to see another example of this coin which carries what might now be a uniquely surviving overdate error. At the time the dies were prepared it’s clear that the die punch for the “9” in the date was upside down when it hit the die, with the result that the initial figure came out as a “6” ....so...the die sinker had another go, this time with the punch the correct way up. This has resulted in a very clear and interesting “9 over inverted 9” date variety. A very attractive example worthy of inclusion in the best collection. AEF / AEF & one of the rarer dates of the series. NOTE: A similar coin (without the probably unique overdate) has just brought £1570 at auction...plus commission! ) Our superb example is only £1350
