A Greatly Outstanding & Historically Important George III GUINEA 1776 This important coin was the last issue which was coined for and widely used as military payment in the then Colonial, Pre-Revolutionary North America. [BACKGROUND] “THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION”. & DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE, 1776 A Seldom Seen, “AMERICAN REVOLUTION “& ”DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE” 1776 Dated Gold Guinea of King George III. This coin always causes immense excitement within the U.S.A. Colonial Coin collectors fraternity when an example very occasionally shows up on a table at an American coin show. For obvious reasons it’s a highly coveted coin that’s missing from most U.S. collections and over the past many years when we regularly had a table at the many coast-to-coast shows, it was always, always the very first coin that sold as soon as the doors opened. When it’s seen at all, this exciting date invariably shows up in only basic Fine-AVF condition and even then normally exhibits extensive surface action and circulation wear. This greatly outstanding example is in minimum EF+ condition or slightly better. It has a minor and ancient test area on the obverse lower rim at 5 o’clock where someone, almost certainly a concerned and contemporary Colonial resident has long ago checked it out for purity and authenticity. In its day the coin was a Quarter Ounce of .9166 gold and was in circulation at a value of 21/- shillings which was a very very serious sum of money in 1776 and far too much to lose if you didn’t follow due diligence before acceptance. In this context, the test does not in any way affect the value of this wonderful piece. Indeed, it goes to further demonstrate its previous “on the ground” history & its early colonial historical provenance. A Very Important Coin in Outstanding Condition for Type & Date. EF or Better, An Excellent & Well Struck Coin. STRICTLY ONE ONLY £2950
