A HIGH GRADE & ATTRACTIVE JAMES VI ”THIRTY SHILLINGS”
(After His Accession to the English Throne) “Shield with arms of England in 1st & 4th Quarters” A HIGH GRADE & ATTRACTIVE JAMES VI ”THIRTY SHILLINGS”
(After His Accession to the English Throne) “Shield with arms of England in 1st & 4th Quarters” This is a very attractive & well struck example of what was in fact the first Scottish “Half Crown”. When this coin was struck, James VI of Scotland had just been crowned James 1st of England.

The weight and value of Scots coins had been brought into alignment with the English coinage with the Scots Crown sized 60/- piece being valued at 5/-...and pro rata with the other coinage.

This equestrian design which was first used here on the “30 Shillings / Halfcrowns” of James I, became the long running and standard basic design for the “English” Crowns & Halfcrowns of his Son Charles 1st from 1625.

A HIGH GRADE & ATTRACTIVE JAMES VI ”THIRTY SHILLINGS”
(After His Accession to the English Throne) “Shield with arms of England in 1st & 4th Quarters” This issue was heavily used in general circulation on both sides of the previous border and is normally only seen in a very poor state. This example is a most pleasing coin and because of its important historical position in the combined coinage is a much sought after connecting type.

As a serious collector of 16th century hammered silver, and with particular interest in the coins of Scotland, this will be a really “must have” item for inclusion in your collection.

The coin displays an all over original even grey tone and was struck centrally on a typical planchette which displays a couple of quite natural edge “gives’ which were produced at the time of striking. The coin shows very little if any circulation and has survived with zero damage.

(After His Accession to the English Throne) “Shield with arms of England in 1st & 4th Quarters” We therefore have no issue at all in giving a description of this specimen as EF/ EF

This is VERY good looking coin of great Scots - English historical interest.
