This example is without any doubt one of the finest extant examples of this practically unobtainable date. Amazingly, this coin is an “old friend” as I owned this actual coin back in the mid-1980’s and it was sold to a fellow dealer who sold it to a seriously knowledgeable gold collector.

Prior to its arrival with me, I had never previously seen another 1862 in any grade, and I haven’t personally seen another single example since.

An Excessively Rare Victorian Half Sovereign of 1862. “Mintage unknown” but probably only a few hundred examples. In strict problem free “VF”. Without any doubt one of the finest extant examples of this practically unobtainable date. Having looked back through innumerable past catalogues and checked for previous auction appearances of this date we can find only four examples in the last 30 years, all of which were well worn, (graded VG-A/Fine), and two of which had serious flan flaws & other problems.

This pretty much confirms a tiny tiny mintage which is not recorded.

One of the aforementioned four examples was sold by a London Auction House in 2021 and was only “barely fine” with a bad obverse surface fault brought £1,596 inc’ commission !

The current 2024 catalogue price for a coin of this date is:
Fine: £850.
VF: £2500.
EF: £9000.
UNC: “The Coin is Unknown in Uncirculated”
